Alcohol detection system by ALC-PRO: Transerco’s journey to digitize operational safety

To better understand the journey toward digitizing safety control in daily operations, ALC-PRO spoke with a representative from the Operations Center of Hanoi Transport Corporation (Transerco) – an organization that operates a fleet of over 1,000 vehicles and is among the first to pilot ALC-PRO Vietnam’s alcohol detection system.

Background: Why Transerco is piloting an alcohol detection system

Mr. Nguyen Viet Tuan, a representative from the Operations Center, explains that Transerco currently operates an urban bus network with a large fleet and a driver workforce active every day. Given this scale, operational safety has always been the corporation’s top priority.

Previously, alcohol control was carried out mainly through manual checks at each unit, combined with operations staff and supervisory inspection. This approach met management needs in earlier years, but as operations grew in scale, it began to show limitations: data remained scattered, report compilation was time-consuming, and real-time oversight was difficult.

That’s why Transerco decided to pilot ALC-PRO Vietnam’s alcohol measurement system — to digitize the process, increase transparency, and improve the effectiveness of operational safety management.

Transerco’s current alcohol testing process

According to Mr. Tuan, alcohol testing is now mandatory before a driver takes on a shift or a bus departs the depot, following a standardized process across Transerco’s units:

  • Before each shift, drivers take an alcohol test on a fixed-installation measurement system, under the supervision of operations staff, inspection personnel, or safety officers.
  • Test results are automatically recorded by the system, stored electronically, and synced to a centralized management platform.
  • Supervisors monitor results in real time to confirm a driver is fit to operate before shift handover or departure.
  • For cases that don’t meet requirements, the unit suspends the driver’s work assignment and handles it according to the corporation’s regulations.

Mr. Tuan noted that applying the ALC-PRO system has made the testing process more transparent and consistent, reduced reliance on manual steps, and effectively supports inspection and data cross-checking when needed.

Early results from the pilot phase

After a period piloting the alcohol detection system, Transerco has recorded several positive shifts in awareness and operating processes:

  • Compliance awareness among drivers has clearly improved.
  • The testing process is now more synchronized, transparent, and proactive than before; applying the technology has helped drivers build the habit of self-checking before each shift.
  • The system supports centralized data management, improves real-time monitoring capability, and significantly cuts down report-compilation time.
  • Many drivers now see alcohol testing not just as a mandatory requirement, but as a way to protect their professional reputation and gain peace of mind while on duty.

Getting past the early adjustment period

Mr. Tuan shared that during the initial rollout, some hesitancy was inevitable, particularly when introducing a new technology-driven process into safety control.

Transerco identified internal communication and building consensus among drivers as a top priority. Units proactively explained the purpose of the system, emphasizing that it was designed to support operational safety and protect both drivers and passengers — not simply to increase surveillance. The process was also communicated clearly, openly, and transparently, making it easy for drivers to understand and follow. Over time, most drivers came to actively cooperate and gradually built the habit of self-testing before every shift.

Looking ahead

Transerco is gradually advancing digital transformation across its management and operations, with a corporate-wide direction toward connecting and synchronizing data across systems to improve governance efficiency.

For the alcohol control system specifically, the data currently supports monitoring, storage, and centralized lookup well. Going forward, Transerco says it will continue researching the potential to integrate with other operations management platforms — to improve interoperability, support automated alerts, and raise the overall quality of operational safety governance.
